About the department
Orthopaedics treats bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons — fractures and accident injuries, arthritis, back and neck pain, sports injuries and problems that limit walking or daily work.
Treatment ranges from a plaster, brace or medicines to physiotherapy and surgery. Our orthopaedic team works with the emergency department, digital X-ray, CT scan, MRI and physiotherapy so that diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation happen in one place.
Joint and back problems are very common among people who do heavy work, stand for long hours or have diabetes. Early treatment often prevents a small problem from becoming a long-term disability.

Common questions
When should I see an orthopaedic doctor?
See an orthopaedic doctor after a fall or injury with pain, swelling or difficulty moving, or for joint, back or neck pain that does not settle within a few weeks.
Do I need an X-ray for every injury?
Not always. The doctor examines you first and advises an X-ray, CT scan or MRI only when needed. Digital X-ray, CT scan and MRI are available at the hospital.
When is knee replacement needed?
When arthritis has badly damaged the knee and pain limits walking and sleep despite medicines, physiotherapy and weight control. Your orthopaedic surgeon will examine you and your X-rays before advising it.
How long does a fracture take to heal?
Most fractures take 6–12 weeks, depending on the bone, your age and health. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes slow healing. Follow-up X-rays check that the bone is joining well.
