About the department

Neurosurgery treats conditions of the brain, spine and nerves that may need an operation — head injuries, bleeding in the brain, brain tumours, fluid build-up, slip disc, spinal cord compression and spine injuries.

Head and spine injuries after road accidents and falls are among the most urgent problems in any hospital. Our emergency department, CT scan, MRI, ICU and Blood Centre work together so that a patient with a serious injury can be assessed and treated without being shifted to another city.

Not every brain or spine problem needs surgery. Many slip disc and back pain problems improve with medicines, rest and physiotherapy. Your neurosurgeon will explain every option and advise an operation only when it is the safest way forward.

When to see a doctor

  • A head injury with vomiting, drowsiness, confusion or a fit (emergency)
  • Back or neck pain spreading down the arm or leg
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control (emergency)
  • A new, severe or worsening headache, especially with vomiting
  • Difficulty walking or loss of balance
  • A brain or spine problem seen on a CT scan or MRI

In an emergency, do not wait for an appointment — the emergency department is open 24 hours.

Common questions

What should I do after a head injury?

Come to the emergency department straight away if there is loss of consciousness, vomiting, severe headache, confusion, fits or bleeding from the ear or nose. The emergency department is open 24 hours — call +91 73004 74747.

Does every slip disc need surgery?

No. Most slip disc and sciatica problems improve with medicines, rest and physiotherapy. Surgery is considered when pain does not improve, or when there is weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control.

Is spine surgery safe?

Like any operation it has risks, which your neurosurgeon will explain. For the right patient, spine surgery relieves pressure on nerves and helps recovery. You will be advised surgery only when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.

Are CT scan and MRI available at the hospital?

Yes. CT scan and MRI are available at the hospital, including for emergency patients.

How long is the recovery after brain or spine surgery?

It depends on the operation. Many spine patients walk within a day or two; brain surgery patients usually need ICU care first. Your surgeon will give you a clear recovery plan, including physiotherapy.
