About the department
Nephrology looks after the kidneys — chronic kidney disease, kidney damage from diabetes and high blood pressure, kidney infections, and dialysis when the kidneys can no longer clean the blood.
Kidney disease often has no symptoms in the early stages. Simple blood and urine tests can find it early, when medicines, diet and good control of sugar and blood pressure can slow it down.
For patients with kidney failure, dialysis is available at the hospital. The nephrologist plans dialysis, diet and medicines together and monitors the patient regularly.

Common questions
What are the early signs of kidney disease?
Kidney disease often has no symptoms early on. Swelling of the feet or face, foamy urine, passing less urine, tiredness and high blood pressure can be signs. People with diabetes or high blood pressure should get their kidneys checked regularly.
How are kidney problems diagnosed?
Usually with blood and urine tests, and sometimes an ultrasound. Laboratory services and ultrasound are available at the hospital.
Is dialysis available at the hospital?
Yes. Dialysis is available at the hospital. Our staff will explain the schedule and preparation.
Does dialysis mean the kidneys will never recover?
Not always. In sudden kidney failure, dialysis may be needed only for a short time while the kidneys recover. In chronic kidney failure, it is usually long-term. Your nephrologist will explain which applies to you.
What diet should kidney patients follow?
Usually less salt, controlled water intake and limits on potassium-rich foods and protein, depending on your stage. Your doctor will give you a diet plan based on your reports.
Is treatment covered under Ayushman Bharat or insurance?
Star Hospital is empanelled under Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) and works with many insurance and TPA panels. Bring your card and ID, and confirm your coverage with our insurance desk on +91 73004 84848.
