About the department

General medicine is the first stop for most adult illnesses. A physician diagnoses and treats fevers and infections, and manages long-term conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, asthma and anaemia.

Seasonal fevers — dengue, malaria, typhoid and viral fever — are common in our region. Early tests and the right treatment prevent complications such as low platelets and dehydration. Patients who need closer monitoring can be admitted to the ward or ICU.

If you need a specialist, the physician will guide you to the right department and coordinate your care, so you do not have to work out on your own which doctor to see.

When to see a doctor

  • Fever lasting more than two days, or fever with rash or body pain
  • Cough, cold, wheezing or breathing difficulty
  • Weakness, tiredness, dizziness or unexplained weight loss
  • High blood sugar or blood pressure readings
  • Stomach pain, vomiting or loose motions
  • Swelling of the feet or face
  • A yearly health check-up, especially after 40

In an emergency, do not wait for an appointment — the emergency department is open 24 hours.

Common questions

When should I see a general physician?

A general physician is the right first doctor for fever, infections, diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid problems, weakness and most adult illnesses. They will refer you to a specialist if needed.

When is fever dangerous?

Come to the hospital quickly if fever comes with severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, breathlessness, bleeding from gums or nose, red spots on the skin, very little urine, or if it lasts more than three days.

Can I get blood tests done at the hospital?

Yes. Blood sample collection and testing are available at the hospital, according to the tests offered by the laboratory. Many reports are ready the same day.

How often should a diabetic get tested?

Check blood sugar as advised by your doctor and get an HbA1c test every three months. Yearly kidney, eye, foot and cholesterol checks help catch complications early.
