About the department
The dental department looks after teeth, gums and the mouth — from routine check-ups and cleaning to fillings, root canal treatment, extractions and replacement of missing teeth.
Most dental problems start without pain. Decay and gum disease found early can be treated with a simple filling or cleaning; left alone, they can lead to infection, tooth loss and costly treatment.
We treat adults and children, and explain each step before starting so that the visit is comfortable, even for people who feel nervous at the dentist.
When to see a doctor
- Toothache, or pain on biting
- Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet food
- Bleeding, swollen or receding gums
- A broken, chipped or loose tooth
- Pain or swelling at the back of the jaw (wisdom tooth)
- Bad breath that does not go away
- A routine check-up every six months
In an emergency, do not wait for an appointment — the emergency department is open 24 hours.

Common questions
How often should I visit the dentist?
A dental check-up every six months helps catch decay and gum problems early, before they become painful.
What should I do for a toothache?
Rinse with warm salt water and avoid very hot, cold or sweet food. Do not keep a painkiller tablet on the gum. See a dentist soon, especially if there is swelling or fever.
Is root canal treatment painful?
Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthesia, so most people feel little or no pain during it. It usually relieves the pain caused by the infected tooth.
Is it better to remove a tooth or save it?
Saving your natural tooth with a filling or root canal is usually better. Removal is advised when the tooth is too damaged to repair. The dentist will explain both options.
When should a child first see a dentist?
By the first birthday, or when the first teeth appear. Early visits help prevent decay and build good habits.
